Pua Kala is part of the poppy family, though it does not contain opioids. They are great natural deterrents for grazers and fairly resilient. Their delicate petals pair interestingly with their prickly buds and stems. Sometimes I see them driving past the Botanical Garden and imagine they are dancing in the wind.
Local artist Bailey Onaga, under the alias of B. Miyo, brings her bubbly perspective on immersive nature through a series of paintings. Growing up as an introverted child raised in Wailuku, she often found solace in nature and art. She hopes to honor her inner keiki by utilizing bold shapes, whimsical musings, and bright colors. Often challenged by her identity and kuleana as Kānaka ʻŌiwi, she has found purpose and identity in rendering hopeful visions of thriving native species.
