Wiliwili are known to grow in dry forests, though I was pleasantly surprised to come across a few makai side along my many walks on the Waihe’e Coastal Trail.  Maui hoisted a handcrafted rope to a wiliwili tree in order to snare the sun for longer days.  Although I’ve never had the pleasure of viewing wiliwili at night, I’ve always been fascinated by their fiery petals, which I imagine glow in the light of the moon and stars.   

Local artist Bailey Onaga, under the alias of B. Miyo, brings her bubbly perspective on immersive nature through a series of paintings.  Growing up as an introverted child raised in Wailuku, she often found solace in nature and art.  She hopes to honor her inner keiki by utilizing bold shapes, whimsical musings, and bright colors.  Often challenged by her identity and kuleana as Kānaka ʻŌiwi, she has found purpose and identity in rendering hopeful visions of thriving native species.
