Kaulana ʻO Moʻolele
Moʻolele, our kupuna waʻa peleleu hails from Lahaina and was born on September 20, 1975. She is named for a famous moʻo that leaped from Mauna Ka Wahine and into Moananuiākea. The kalai waʻa who shaped and built her was Uncle Levan Sequeira, there at Lele (Lahaina). Moʻolele was the one that caused the Hui O Waʻa Kaulua to form as a supporting non-profit. Within our Lahaina and Maui community, many of our community members, kupuna, makua, and keiki, have helped to build and take care of her. She has been there to support families as they transitioned ‘ohana into Pō. My late father’s voyaging canoe genealogy starts there with Mo’olele, first. She was his first teacher when he first started to learn about wa’a kaulua care, maintenance, and sailing. She has taught so many of us. Moʻolele has voyaged to all of the major Hawaiian islands except Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. As she has now transitioned into another realm, we know that she continues to sail with our ancestors onboard.- Kala Tanaka
